William McVey (b.1905 d.1999)

McVey's reputation was immediately international by the 1963 commission of a statue of Winston Churchill, commissioned by the British government for the Washington D.C. embassy. In this region, we recognize his relief of Paul Bunyan in Lakeview Terrace and statues of Tom Johnson in the courtyard of the Western Reserve Historical Society and Hart Crane (1986) on the campus of Case Western Reserve University . One only has to look at his realistic memorial statue of Crane at University Circle and the very abstract memorial by sculptor Gene Kangas in Hart Crane Memorial Park to see how wide ranging the artists concepts and styles are. These two works are done 14 years apart.
