Abe Frajndlich (b.1946)

Born in 1946 in Frankfurt, Germany. Immigrated to US in 1956 and resided in Cleveland until 1985. Currently lives and works in New York City. Well known in the regional art scene when he lived in Cleveland, Abe Frajndlich set out to capture many familiar sights of Cleveland in unfamiliar ways. In 1980 he photographed architectural landmarks by experimenting with infrared-sensitive film. This kind of film reacts to both heat and light, causing warm areas and green leaves to glow luminescently while reds are thrown into contrast. The infrared effect often makes the structures in Frajndlich's photographs give off a dreamy halo, as if they glowed from within. He printed the suite of 12 images as black and white gelatin silverprint photographs. The subjects range from this aerial view of Cleveland interstate highways converging on downtown and a view of the Noguchi sculpture at the Justice Center to the Cleveland Museum of Art fountain and homes hugging a Shaker Lake. The results reflect familiar architectural elements of the city in a lively different light.
