Gaertner, Carl

Carl Gaertner (b.1898 d.1952)

A nationally recognized artist, especially of American scene subjects, Gaertner traveled here and went on summer painting excursions to Provincetown with George Adomeit and others. His work was shown at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1922-53, and widely elsewhere. He taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art from 1925 to 1952. Gaertner's piece in the Huntington Bank collection excited the future curator of the Hahn Loeser Park collection and stimulated his interest in developing a regional art collection. This Gaertner work from the law firm collection is one of the special examples of Gaertner's ability to abstract both atmostphere and industrial shape. He has captured the essence and drama of the industrial night scene.
