Tacha, Athena

Athena Tacha (b.1936)

Athena Tacha is a pioneer in the field of site sculpture and her reputation is nationally recognized. Her public career started with this piece commissioned in celebration of the country's bicentennial. Now her sculpture can be found in more than thirty locations throughout the United States . Her architectural site sculpture can also be seen in two pieces on Bellflower Road on the Case Western Reserve University Campus. These step constructions can be seen and used as part of the everyday life. Tacha was professor of sculpture at Oberlin College from 1973 until 1998 when she moved to Washington D.C. She has had more than 15 solo exhibits of her work and a retrospective at the High Museum in Atlanta in 1989, and has been included in more than 50 group shows. She is the recipient of numerous awards including a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1975 and an Ohio Arts Council individual artist fellowship in 1991 and has been the subject of many articles and essays.
