1871 -James F. Ryder sets up a photography studio and art gallery. Dies in 1904
-Archibald Willard of Wellington Archibald establishes a studio. Dies in 1918.
-Archibald Willard's painting The Spirit of '76 appears in the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Chromolithographs of the painting published by Ryder make the image nationally famous. -Archibald Willard and others establish the Art Club, which remains active until 1900, with classes and annual exhibitions held on the top floor of City Hall.
