1983 -Evan Turner appointed director, Cleveland Museum of Art. Served 10 years. -Charles Jackson Pinkney published “The Record” a newspaper featuring photographic essays of “Sheroes and Heroes” from the African American community. -Philip Johnson designed new Play House complex incorporating the Drury, Brooks Theaters and a new Bolton Theater.
-Cleveland Artists Foundation launched to preserve, research and exhibit the work of Northeastern Ohio artists.
-Committee for Public Art founded, a key partner in the revitalization of downtown community. (now Cleveland Public Art)
-National Society of Enamelists awarded Kenneth Bates the title Dean of American Enamelists. He died in 1994. -Cleveland Cultural Coalition founded as Cleveland arts consortium; focuses on increasing audiences for member organizations. Ceased operation in 2000.
-North Coast Harbor, originally known as the Inner Harbor features a surrounding promenade and 3 acre park.
-Sculpture Center founded to provide opportunities for sculptors; 18 artists represented. -William Busta Gallery established Little Italy, the most important commercial gallery in NE, Ohio. Closed in 1998. Opened on Cleveland’s West Side in 2001, closed 2002.
